The People of `Iolana

Founder & Director

Kapu Waia'u Dancel is a Kanaka ʻŌiwi, mixed heritage, movement artist, story teller and counseling education graduate student. Having grown up in a community vibrantly living amidst trauma, poverty and complex intersecting oppressions, Kapu's heart is for the disappeared storytellers. With a background in social service and a love for all things creative movement, Kapu hopes to foster a space where folx of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to explore these physical arts & disciplines free from the constraints of finances and/or social barriers; a place that recognizes their voices and art as inherently valuable.

Kapu is passionate about seeing the artistic expression that comes forth from the thoughts, stories & perspectives of young folx of diverse and marginalized backgrounds. Kapu is equally excited to see young folx with little to no previous training empower themselves through movement and self-expression. Kapu firmly believes in movement as language that brings a voice to the voiceless; and creates storytellers that are empowerers.
