FAQs

How old do I have to be to join?

Currently, ʻIolana Collective is working with young people between the ages of 14-17 years old!

Am I eligible to apply?

ʻIolana Collective has a basic application that will ask the applicant and applicant's parent or legal guardian a series a questions to assess your eligibility. This application helps us to assess if this program is a resource that would serve your needs. We encourage BIPOC and Queer folx and those with high need to apply. If you have any further questions regarding eligibility, please contact us on our "CONTACT" page.

Is ʻIolana Collective only for female-identifying persons?

The short answer: No!

This program started with young womxn in mind. However, this aspect of our program has evolved with us, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

How do I apply?

We now have an quick and easy online application! Click on our "JOIN" page and scroll down to find it.

What if i Don't own "activewear"?

What is the needed/appropriate activewear for ʻIolana Collective classes? We require students to wear yoga pants/leggings that are zipper-free (no metal embellishments/buttons). In terms of tops we require shirts that cover armpits and aren't too baggy. These too must be zipper-free. Don't own this kind of activewear? No problem. We've got resources.

Don't let this keep you from applying!

Here at ʻIolana Collective, we are an ʻohana (family). If you don't own the appropriate apparel, we will help you acquire it (at no cost to you). Just let us know in the comments section of the application.

Are there any costs associated with the program?

Nope. Students and their families will not be asked to pay for classes, additional trainings or the cost of performance-related gear. The only significant task that the student (and their family) will be in charge of is the student's transportation to and from practices and IC events.

Who will be running the program?

Primarily, the program will be run by the Founder and Director, Kapu Waia'u Dancel. Kapu is CPR and AED certified, and is background checked by Portland Public Schools and Portland State University (PSU). Kapu is currently a counseling education graduate student at PSU. For more information regarding Kapu's background, visit the "STAFF" page under the "ABOUT" in the overhead menu. Additionally, IC Fellows assist Kapu with leading exercises and teachings during practices. To learn more about the IC Fellows, go to "PROGRAMS" in the overhead menu and click on "IC Fellowship".

During the program, ʻIolana Collective may have guest teachers that will lead classes. Guest teachers will meet and follow a clear and strict code of ethics and adhere to the policies and mission statement of `Iolana Collective.
